Recent Obsession: Apple Ring

I've been obsessed with finding an Apple ring after I saw one on Old Gold Boutique which I am super excited because they're opening a new store in Montreal next month! Because I'm an impatient little brat, I had to buy this ring when I saw it at Aldo on sale.

Maybe this obsession was born when I became allergic to apples...so if I can't eat it. Wear it? There is logic in there somewhere.

Pretzel in the War Room

I've seen many photoshopped war room pictures but this one HAS to be the best. That Princess Beatrice's pretzel hat made by Philip Traecy fits so well on everyone! No words can describe how amazing this picture is!

Montreal Weekends

I spent the past long weekend in Montreal with the husband. Montreal is so lovely because its a good middle ground between Vancouver and Toronto. People go about their day at a relatively slow and relaxed pace (like Vancouver)while the art/design/fashion industry is quite strong. We stayed at La Maison du Patriote which was amazing because it was smack in the middle of Old Montreal! The weather was so generous by only raining for one night which allowed us to Bixi Bike around town. It was fun until I sprained my thumb (which eventually turned purple) from trying to reach for the brakes, and got a sore bum.

Me (with my fluffy monkey slippers) and the husband.

La Banquise has the most organismic poutine EVER. This poutine is heavenly with it's bacon, onion, sausage and very squeeky cheese. This place is super busy all the time, which is probably why it's open 24hrs.

We decided to work that poutine off by climbing Mont-Royal *this is like 12am*. Unfortunately it was so dark that we couldn't find are way up. I ended up stepping into a hole and twisting my ankle.

We also stopped by The Sparrow for all you can brunch. This restaurant is so cute with its bird wallpaper, comfortable sofas, and live musical performances.

Scones, caramel cheese, and the freshest butter I have ever tasted.

Dropped by Café Olimpico for our daily dose of caffeine.

I have to say Montreal had better thrift/vintage stores than Toronto. Friperie on Saint-Laurent was one of my favs, maybe it was because I scored an Alice & Olivia silk dress and belt? Friperie was quite small but the selection and prices were awesome.

Le Chat Perlé had the coolest costume jewelry as well as higher end vintage such as Dior and Chanel. There were so many cute and original rings, but like always, they were too big for me.

On Sunday we went to Tam Tams at Mount Royal. Tam Tams is a free event where people gather to play drums, dance, display art etc.

Super cute girls displaying their vintage finds.

The best sign ever!

We also went to the BioDome to see animals! This one cracked me up because nailed to the wood Jesus style. No? Too cruel?

This alligator stayed stationary like this for a good hour... ? so long that I thought it had died. Look at those paws up!

The most amazing Creme Brulee ever!

Me Eat Food: Kale Chips

After seeing Gwyneth Paltrow on Ellen couple weeks ago promoting her new cook book filled with yummy recipes, I decided to try what seemed to be the easiest one (because I'm lazy like that).

All you really need to make Kale Chips are...

  • Kale leaves
  • olive oil/canola oil
  • salt
  1. wash kale
  2. remove leaves from stem and break into smaller bits (no too small because after baking they shrivel and shrink a lot)
  3. toss leaves with 1 tablespoon of oil
  4. add salt
  5. bake for about 20-25 min at 200 degrees F

The pictures above was the successful batch. I know what you are thinking, how could you mess up a simple recipe like this? Well I would like to blame it on the instructions I found online that told me to bake them at 350 degrees F. This resulted in a plate of ashes.

Thought of the Day: Andrej Pejic- Dossier

Andrej Pejic a Serbian androgynous model is the face of the newest issue of Dossier. I've always been a fan of Andrej because of his chameleon like looks. He's graced the runway for Jean Paul Gaultier (for the men and women show) and Marc Jacobs. When you look at his body, he is clearly a man but his face is so calm, serene and feminine. To me that combination is so intriguing and instantly draws me in.

However, two major bookstores in the US, Barnes & Noble and Borders have decided to have an opaque plastic wrap covering the magazine at Dossier's own expense. Although the bookstores do understand that Pejic is indeed a man the retailers stated that "the model is young and it could be deemes as a naked female". I would just like to point out men and women are constantly placed on magazine covers half naked, they are in movies, even daytime television.

There is no doubt in my mind that if this cover had featured a young man with pecs of steel and washboard abs, nobody would have given it a second though about it. I feel like the hair rollers and pins are what pushes this over the edge for these big retailers and that this hair is really meant for females. If Ellen Degeneres who does not have a typical feminine look can be the face for Cover Girl, why cant a young man wear hair rollers in his hair on a cover of a magazine? We live in a generation where different people and bodies are celebrated and stereotypes are being broken (even if it is still a work in progress.) In my opinion, nobody should be censored for being who they are.

*Insert creative title here*

Last Friday I had a lovely day off interning! Started off with going to Bikram at 9:30 AM (yes even the AM surprised me) and then took a stroll in the Distillery district in the afternoon. It was suppose to rain/thundershower but luckily the weather was nice for us (until early evening)! It was a good chance for me to practice photography as I want to eventually graduate from a picture taker to an amateur photographer.

Look who I found! Russell Peters on a Segway!

I think this is my favorite of all the photos I took that day!

(I feel like a total creep taking this picture but it was too cute to pass up)

DIY: Grizzly Where? In My Hair?!

Feather hair extensions have popular for awhile and thanks to Michelle Phan (who I adore), it's pretty easy to DIY them. However it seems a little impractical to actually crimp them on the hair since you can't wash your hair as the feathers get wet. There's always the option of clip on but I have the habit of running my fingers through my hair every 10 minutes, so that's a no go. An easy way to achieve the similar effect, is to create earrings out of grizzly feathers. (Sorry about the title, I just wanted a word that rhymed with hair so it was either "where" "bear" "affair" or "millionaire") Materials you will need to create these earrings are...
  • 1 pair of ear wires
  • crimp beads
  • culottes or clam shells
  • needle nose pliers
  • scissors
  • Grizzly feathers (Depending where you are the feathers can be quite costly. I got approximately 24 feathers for $12 CND.)

From left to right: crimp beads, culottes/clam shells, ear wire

Only in a small section on the top, strip away feathers (I just used my fingers) leaving only the stem. Repeat for as many feathers as you would like to use.

Thread all feather stems through clam shell.

Insert crimp bead through all stems and squish the crimp bead together using the pliers.

Trim off excess feather stems making sure when the clam closes, no stems reach past the edge of the clam opening.

close clam shell

Insert clam shell through Ear wire. (open and close with pliers)

OPI- Pirates of the Caribbean

Just based on looking at the colors below I couldn't have guessed that this collection is based on Pirates of the Caribbean. I'm thinking more along the lines of Care Bear or Something Borrowed. The creme colors making them look sweet and cutesy and not argh ahoy matey let-me-pop-that-eyeball-back-in-myeye-socket colors ifyouknowwhatimean.

They're sold out of silver shatter everywhere but I'm not too bummed about it. It looks kind of cool but lately it's just been shatter overkill especially with China Glaze crackle collection. I also passed on the pinks because I've never had good luck with OPI's consistency for them. As for Planks a Lot, it's a cute color but looks terrible on my skin tone, plus there are endless cheaper dupes such as Grape Pop and Spontaneous by China Glaze.

From left to right: Silver Shatter, Skull and Crossbones, Steady as She Rose, Sparrow Me The Drama, Planks A lot, Stranger Tides, Mermaids Tears

Stranger Tides is dirty murky green. Love love love! Got amazing coverage only with two coats. Only complaint that is that it's so muddy looking it sucked the shine right out of it. This definitely needed a top coat. Similar to Sew Psyched by Essie but much lighter!
Stranger Tides is a dirty jade green. Reminds me a bit of Turquoise and Caicos by Essie. Didn't even realize they were so similar until I saw them side by side. Not a super fan of this as it required 3 coats.

TCAF-Toronto Comic Arts Festival

Mayhem!!!

The so amazing Lisa Hanawalt from Brooklyn signing my comic!

LIsa's drawings are absolutely sublime. Why is she so amazing? They are delicious, disgusting, and hilarious at the same time.

My graphics professor Diana with her old man face and Steve Manale.

Transformers made out of meat by Steve Manale. Another purchase based on grossness factor. I have no idea where to stick them and will probably leave them on the sheets forever like all my other stickers since I was 5.

Mike White illustrator of Amity Blamity, drawing me business card.

Out of all business cards I would have to say this one is the best mainly because it is a huge ego booster.

"I crap rainbows" SO CUTE

One of my favourite postcard take-away pieces by Faryle Dalyrmple.

When I saw this saw this postcard by Drew Weing, I literally squealed. Each kitty's expression is different and they are SO accurate. There are the ones who are scared of anything and everything, the evil ones who own their owners, and then there are the ones that act like sluts. You can spot one near the center winking seductively. Slutty kittens really know how to work it, last time I encountered one, my face doubled in size and I had to take a Reactine.
